The local language is Russian. During the workshop, the official language will be English.
Currency, foreign exchange and banking
The Russian currency is Russian Rouble. The current exchange rate can be checked here:
Major international credit cards are accepted at hotels, as well as at most restaurants, cafes, shops, airports, railway stations, and car rental agencies only in Moscow, however, not everywhere in Kamchatka. There are several Automated Teller Machines (ATM) in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky or in Elizovo, the largest towns in Kamchatka, that are located 24 km and 30 km from Paratunka, respectively. Please, consult your card issuer bank on the fees applicable. It is easy to exchange U.S. Dollars and Euro with Russian Rouble also in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky or in Elizovo. Banks usually have short days on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays in Russia. We do no not recommend using traveler checks.
Only credit cards with 4-digit PIN codes are accepted by ATMs in Russia. Cards with 5-digit PIN codes will likely be deemed invalid.
Electricity in Russia is 220 Volts, frequency is 50 Hz nationwide.
Russia (along with much of Eastern Europe) uses sockets with 4.0 mm pins similar to Type C plugs and the 4.8 mm standard used by Type E & F (Eurostandard). See details here:
The month of August is characterized by gradually falling daily temperatures, with daily highs around 19°C throughout the month, exceeding 25°C or dropping below 14°C only one day in ten. If you plan to go to the outdoor excursions, please bring tracking boots, windproof trousers and jackets.
How to reach Paratunka
Paratunka is located about 30 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the largest town in Kamchatka, that is about 6773 km from Moscow or almost 9 hours by airplane. Representatives of the LOC will meet the participants and the lecturers in the airport, and transport them to the hotel by bus. Participants will be placed in Krechet-hotel near IKIR. Information of Krechet-hotel is only in Russian: http://krechet-tour.ru/krechet/. Credit cards are not accepted at Krechet-hotel. Please, inform us about your flight in advance and be free to contact LOC for suggestions and help email@example.com.
There is a wide array of choices in Kamchatka for tourists. This may be indoor relaxation with an extensive excursion program, hunting and fishing tours, horse-riding and hiking routs, sea trips along the Avacha bay, extreme, alpinist and ecological tours, helicopter excursions. Russian visa is a permit issued to a foreigner by the Russian visa authorities for entry into, exit from or transit through Russian territory. All visitors to Russia must have a passport valid for at least six months after the end of the trip. Visitors from most countries must obtain Russian entry visa. Participants are advised to arrange health insurance, which is also necessary for visa application.
